Trustmark Mutual Holding Company experienced a data breach on May 13, 2015, due to a software error in its automated billing e-mail system. Encrypted e-mails containing sensitive personal information (name, SSN, payroll deduction info) were inadvertently sent to multiple insurance carrier clients instead of just the relevant one. The error was discovered on May 14, 2015. Trustmark recalled the emails, confirmed deletion with recipients, corrected the software error, and implemented safeguards. Affected individuals were offered two years of identity protection via Experian.
