The California Department of Justice disclosed personal information on June 27, 2022, due to a misconfiguration during an update to its Firearms Dashboard Portal. The exposed data included names, dates of birth, addresses, and government-issued identifiers for individuals involved in concealed carry weapon permit processes between 2011 and 2021. The data was publicly accessible for less than 24 hours before being removed. The DOJ shut down the dashboard, launched an investigation, and offered credit monitoring to affected individuals.

In November 2011, hackers affiliated with the group Anonymous accessed and released private email accounts belonging to a retired California Department of Justice agent who was a member of the CATCH task force. The released emails contained personal information including names, addresses, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, and in some cases financial account or credit card numbers of individuals whose identity theft case files were stored in those emails.
